We sent YouTuber Jack McNeill to go behind the scenes with Team BRIT ahead of the British Endurance Championship at the iconic Silverstone circuit, He spoke to the team and took a closer look at the beautiful McLaren 570S Coupe’s the team drive.
Team BRIT is the world’s first and only all-disabled racing team. Launched in 2015 with just one car and two drivers, the team now compete in three championships, providing opportunities for disabled racing drivers in some of the UK’s most prestigious disciplines including the British GT Championship.
Paul Fullick who finished first in qualifying revealed to Jack in the garage all about how the McLaren’s are modified for himself and the other drivers on the team ahead of the race. “The car has normal control, normal pedals, just like any other car” he explained.
“So you (Jack) can jump in and drive it now straight away, but in addition to that we’ve got the accelerator on the right-hand paddle, a brake on the left-hand paddle, gear up and gear down on both shifters, so no matter where we are in the lock we can get to everything and then we have a radio and pit-timer underneath that. So wherever we are, the whole car can be operated by hand.
“We have a range of disabilities in the team, so I have one leg and my team-mate has got no legs and my team-mate last year had one arm.
“So no matter what disability you’ve got or what limb count you’ve got, you can just pick up the controls that you use, maybe one pedal and one paddle, all pedals or all paddles, whatever you want, you can still drive the car. Every one of our drivers can get in our car and drive.”
