New Driver Insurance
Congratulations on passing your test! Now that you’ve passed you’ll need to change your learner driver cover for first time insurance. At Adrian Flux, we offer new driver insurance for those who have recently got their full licence.
What is new driver insurance?
New driver insurance is a type of policy specifically for those who have recently passed their driving test. It works in exactly the same way as regular car insurance, but is made specifically for new and young drivers.
How much is insurance for a new driver?
Newly qualified drivers are seen as a bigger risk than most as they don’t have as much experience behind the wheel. As a result, you might find that your insurance is more expensive than those who have been driving for years. We compare quotes from over 30 insurers to get you the best deal possible.
The price you must pay for insurance also depends on a number of other factors, such as where you live and the car you choose.
Why is new driver insurance so expensive?
Car insurance for new drivers is generally more expensive because you haven’t got much experience on the road and are therefore seen as a higher risk to insurance companies.
More experienced drivers would have been able to build up a no claims bonus (NCB) over the years. Essentially, for every year you go without making a claim on your insurance, you build up a year of NCB. Having a NCB can be really valuable in helping to reduce your premium.
How can I get more affordable cover as a new driver?
There are a number of ways you can lower the costs of your insurance.
- Call us. Did you know 81.5% of online customers would have received a more affordable quote if they’d spoken to us directly? Give us a call or request a callback now.
- Take an advanced driving course. Qualifications like PassPlus, IAM and RoSPA help lower the risk that you’ll get into an accident.
- Get black box insurance. FluxScore, our black box insurance, is perfect for those looking to save money on car insurance without the usual limitations like curfews. We can offer up to 60% off your premiums.
- Join a car club or forum. We’re partnered with a number of clubs and forums, meaning we can offer up to 15% off if you’re a member of a club.
- Add a named driver to your insurance. Adding a more experienced driver to your policy can help reduce your premium.
- Drive fewer miles. We can put you on a limited mileage policy if you drive less than 7,500 miles in a year, which can help you save.

Can I get new driver insurance on my parents’ car?
Yes, you can take out your own policy on your parents’ car, or you can be added as a named driver to their policy. While the first option is generally more expensive, it’ll help you build a no claims bonus, which can significantly reduce your premium in the long term.
It’s important to note that we can only add you onto someone else’s insurance if you’ll only be using the vehicle from time to time. If you’re going to be the main driver of the vehicle but are put down as a named driver, this is a serious crime called “fronting”. This could void you and your parent’s insurance policy and increase both your premiums in the future.
If you’d like to be put down as a named driver on your parent’s policy, give us a call so we can better understand your circumstances.
Can I add my friend or a family member to my policy?
Yes, just let us know who you want to add and we should be able to sort this out. This could even help reduce your insurance premiums, especially if the person you’re adding has more experience than you behind the wheel. And if they have a clean driving licence, this is an added plus.
You can also add the individual as a named driver on a temporary basis, which is perfect if they’re only borrowing your car for a few days or months.

FAQs
As a general rule, choosing a vehicle in a low insurance group can help you find more affordable cover. Insurance groups range from zero to 50 and are largely based on how powerful the car is. A classic car in a relatively low insurance group can be a great option for those looking to reduce their insurance premium.
